Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic, degenerative disease that strikes young men and women, usually between the ages of 17 and 35. It can be painful, debilitating and can cause the neck and spine to fuse. AS can also affect other parts of the body, including the shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, feet, eyes, lungs and heart.
In the United States, more people have AS than have Multiple Sclerosis, Cystic Fibrosis and Lou Gehrig's disease ... combined.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), almost twice as many people have Spondylitis than have Rheumatoid Arthritis.
